Search engines and sharing previews
Every page of your site has its own title, description and image, used by search engines and by previews when a link is shared (social networks, messaging apps). They come from your content: nothing else to set up.
Where the title, description and image come from
| Page | Title | Description | Image |
|---|---|---|---|
| a tile | the tile's title | site name | the start of its description (160 characters) | its cover |
| other pages | menu name | site name | the site's subtitle (or its name) | the banner (or the logo) |
The site's name is its title field; the tab's icon is the favicon (see Appearance).
For good results
- Fill in the site's
subtitle: it is your home page's description. - Give each tile a description (
description, orcontentfor audio): a few concrete sentences (the work's title, medium, place, year). - Choose covers that read well when small. Social networks often crop previews to landscape (about 1200 × 630): keep the subject centred.
- Fill in the Alternative text of your images in the media library (see captions).
What is done for you
- A sitemap (
/sitemap.xml) lists your pages, your published tiles and their images, so search engines find them. - Search engine and AI crawlers are welcome (
/robots.txt). - Drafts appear nowhere.
Search engines and social networks keep a preview for a while. After a change, the old preview may still show for a few days; the networks' testing tools (for example Facebook's Sharing Debugger) can refresh it.
